Of Shoes and Ships and Sealing Wax

Note: this post has nothing to do with shoes, ships, or sealing wax- just in case you are reading in breathless anticipation for mention of those things.

My life is pretty boring. Not much happens, hence the long span of time inbetween my posts. If anything REALLY exciting-like me dating- ever happens then all of you who read this will be some of the first to know, don't you feel special.

Until then an update on my foot- it is still pretty swollen and does not have full range of motion yet. I go back to the doc in a week and in theory if it is not doing well I will be evaluated for ankle reconstruction surgery. Now doesn't that sound like fun!

Well That Was Fun

Earlier this week I was rock climbing. This was a good thing because I am required to climb once a week in addition to class to get full credit for participation. My friend Karen hooked me up with a buddy of hers named Matt who loves to climb, and we had tried for weeks to mesh schedules so that we could go together. Well on Tuesday, everything meshed and we met up to go climb.

Matt had the brilliant idea that we should try bouldering. This is rock climbing without a rope in case you didn't know. It was my first time trying this, but The Quarry where I climb has a nice bouncy floor so when you fall, you don't get hurt, or at least that is the goal. I showed up with all of my non-athleticism and fell my first time up the wall. I only fell about 2.5 feet, but Matt thought I hit my foot on one of the foot holds as I fell and as I landed, I rolled my ankle. This was the result.

Amazingly enough the foot it not broken, much to the surprise of the doctor. I do however have a level three sprain, which means I tore one ligament, possibly two, and might need surgery. I go see the doctor again in three weeks to see if everything is healing the way it is supposed to. I should stay away from sports. I really should!

Questions........

If you have noticed on my side bar I am taking an Anthropology class this semester. The great thing about this class is there is no final! The bad thing is, the majority of our grade is a research paper due at the end of the semester. So as not to be completly stressed out, I am thinking up subjects now. The paper can be on anything, and I am toying with the idea of writing a paper on courting rituals in different societies. The only problem with that is I havn't the foggiest notion of where to look for books to read on the subject. So this is a call for help- PLEASE let me know if you know of a book that will help me out, or if you have a brilliant idea for a paper that has something to do with anthropology.

In other news, for my rock climbing class I have made it to the top of the climbing wall several times in one class. I am still scared out of my mind that I will fall and plumit to my death (yes I know that is why I have a belay person, but my entire class is made up of cute little nursing studants all of whom I probably out way by about 20 lbs) but I am getting better.

Life in Prison Again

Prison has been most entertaining this week. We had one inmate die, end stage cancer. Another inmate is in the process of dieing from cancer. Then the fun story of the week happened yesterday. One of the inmates picked up his breakfast try, walked to the second tier of the unit, which was odd cause he lives on the first tier, then proceeded to dive head first of the second tier to the floor below. Yup that has been our week.

My trip to San Diego was delightful- despite my flight home being delayed an hour and a half because of the snow that was supposedly falling in Salt Lake. One of the best things I took away from my trip was a new way to read the Book of Mormon. Now I know I am not the only one who has struggled with regular scripture study. I do really well until I get to the Isaiah chapters and then I put down my trusty quad and the bookmark will remain in the same place for months on end. I am getting better, and my new effort has lots to do with my dear friend Nikole. While I was visiting her flooded apartment we were discussing reading our scriptures. Nikole is much better at it than I am, and she got to hear the mission president in her area give a talk about the Book of Mormon, and how to read it with better meaning. He has all his missionaries read the Book of Mormon this way, and Nikole took good notes and started to read it the same way, and she has in turn passed it along to me. So for all of you who are interested here you go.

1. Get a new copy of the Book of Mormon- and I mean the cheap $2 one from the distribution center.

2. Get 4 different colors of colored pencils.

3. As you start to read, mark your scriptures in the following way:

Color #1- Anytime Christ's name is mentioned (nikole and i also mark any form of Christs name, ie: God, Lord, etc.)

Color #2-Principles or Doctrine of the gospel

Color #3- Attributes of Christ

Color #4- Any time that Christ is speaking or being quoted.

It has been very interesting to read this way, and I have found myself paying more attention as I read.
